You can also box opponents in – if you attack an enemy from the front while one of your allies is positioned directly behind them, both units will perform a coordinated attack, making an opportunity to deal extra damage on that turn. In Triangle Strategy, characters can deal critical strikes by attacking an opponent from behind – but that doesn’t just go for you and your party, it applies to your enemies as well. You want them to have the greatest tactical advantage, without leaving them open to unnecessary retaliation. Different weather and ground conditions affect units’ ability to move or may even cause them to incur damage. Different elevations grant advantages or disadvantages when attacking and defending. Like many other games featuring grid battle systems, Triangle Strategy has an emphasis on terrain effects. There is a variety of classic character classes – ranging from swordsmen to mounted units to archers to mages and support classes of every type you’d expect and then some. Highlighting a particular unit will show how far that character can move and the range of effect for their attacks or buffs. Enemies and allies are placed on a battlefield that’s overlaid with a grid. This is where you get your first hands-on experience with the combat.Īs a SRPG in the style of FF Tactics, there’s a lot of features you’d expect to see here in Triangle Strategy. The first part of the demo eventually throws you into a battle on a bridge as Serenoa, Roland, and company attempt to flee the fallen city. Players join the plot in chapter six for the purposes of this demo (kind of an odd choice, but effective nonetheless) with a party led by Serenoa (a lord of House Wolffort), Prince Roland (of said invaded kingdom), and their allies.

These nations each control a major resource (salt, iron, and trade) – basically just waiting for a spark to ignite a war.Īnd of course, that’s exactly what we get: an invasion executed under false pretenses that subjugates one of the major ruling powers, full of carefully crafted lies, bloodshed, and some regicide to boot. The game is set in a land that’s essentially dominated by three houses… I mean nations (sorry, forgot which Switch SRPG I was talking about for a second). Don’t keep this working title – it’s just awful.)īut back to brass tacks: let me give you an idea of what’s going on in Triangle Strategy’s story. We all know Project Octopath became Octopath Traveler. (Also, before I go any further, I just gotta say this: Dear Square, please. From the outset, this seems like a formula for something incredibly unique that will make FF, SRPG, and/or Octopath fans incredibly happy – but that’s not to say Square isn’t taking some big risks with Triangle Strategy.

Triangle Strategy looks like Octopath Traveler and plays like FF Tactics, but with a plot that’s as politically dense as FFXII’s and entirely driven by player choice. In fact, when the trailer released during the Direct, everyone’s first reactions were to compare Triangle Strategy to Final Fantasy Tactics – and after playing the demo, I can say that their instincts weren’t wrong. This time around, Square has opted to make a tactical RPG, rather than another turn-based RPG in the style of Octopath Traveler (hence the strategy in Project Triangle Strategy). However, while Project Triangle Strategy retains its predecessor’s art and musical styles, it does have one immediately noticeable difference: the gameplay. We’ve only gotten a taste so far, and I’m excited to hear more. Based on what I experienced in the demo, Project Triangle Strategy seems to have a similar style of musical composition. While Octopath Traveler is most immediately recognizable for its one-of-a-kind visuals, it also had one of the best soundtracks of the year. It’s almost enough to bring me to tears.)Īlso making a return is the music. (My god, just look at the water in these HD-2D games. Obviously, the signature art style is back in full force – with gorgeous pixel art that evokes a sense of “2.5D” and uses incredible lighting and other environmental effects to create one of the most beautiful, unique looking game worlds that I have personally ever encountered. First thing’s first, let me give you an introduction to what we know about the game so far. I sat down with it and played everything that it has to offer – lasting me about 5 hours total since I had to do two playthroughs to see it all (but I’ll get to why that is later).

Right after the Nintendo Direct, a demo for Project Triangle Strategy went live on the eShop. The game is targeting a 2022 release and will be the next entry in Square Enix’s “HD-2D” series, which started with Octopath Traveler back in 2018. Project Triangle Strategy was arguably one of the most exciting surprise announcements from this week’s Nintendo Direct.
